A Foggy Day in London Town.
While taking note of Hollywood's post-First World hegemony in the cinematic representation of world space, it should not be suggested that Hollywood is the point of origin of all of the discourses within which spaces and places are constructed. The cinematic representation of London is instructive in this regard. There is, in the film Ziegfeld Follies (1946), a dance number involving Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer and entitles 'Limehouse Blues'. Set in an indeterminate, pre-Second World War London, it shows a bleak, fog-ridden Thames-scape populated primarily by Chinese, but also by stalwart 'bobbies', Bill Sykes-type ruffians, pawky and cheerful pearly kings and queens, and bizarre down-and-outs. Where does this representation of London, in a Hollywood movie of the 1940s, come from? There is a specific cinematic reference point, D.W. Griffith's Broken Blossoms (1919), but this simply pushes the question back by one generation. It is quite likely that the 'London discourse' informing both Broken Blossoms and the 'Limehouse Blues' section of Ziegfeld Follies is a composite discourse deriving from travellers' accounts of London, the novels of Charles Dickens (particularly Bleak House), the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and press accounts of the Jack the Ripper murders. It is the same discourse (or more accurately, part of the bricolage making it up) which underpins the American popular song A Foggy Day in London Town. Certainly, this construction of London (or diverse aspects of it) is evident in many Hollywood-based or Hollywood-financed movies such as Dark Eyes of London(1937), Gaslight (1944), Hangover Square (1945), The Verdict (1946), Night and the City(1950) and, in a more upbeat form, Mary Poppins (1964). Although the London of Ziegfeld Follies is in collour, the collour (apart from Lucille Bremer's yellow dress) is very muted. The 'London discourse' shaping the above films may have found the harsh black and white of the classic film noir a more congenial form of expression, hence the clustering of these titles around the 1940s.
